Alternative Treatments For CFS

While no one is sure of the cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, some likely candidates include an abnormal immune system as a kind of autoimmune disorder, chronic infection with viral or fungal pathogens such as herpes or candida, parasitic infestation, and adrenal exhaustion. Additionally, a body depleted of electrons could be an additional or perhaps causative factor. In fact, these factors are probably all related. Each can be addressed with supplements that have been shown to be effective in this condition.

Pine Tree Bark Extract from the French Maritime Pine Tree, has been hailed by researchers as the most potent, natural antioxidant compound ever discovered. It is as safe to use as vitamin C. However, as an antioxidant supplement, it is actually 20 times more powerful than vitamin C, and 50 times more powerful than vitamin E.

There is much research to support that CFS is caused by a 1.Weakened Immune System: A number of scientific papers have found evidence of immunologic alterations in CFS patients. The hypothesis that CFS is also an autoimmune disorder is unproven, but there is suggestive circumstantial evidence to support it. Free Radical damage is implicated as a causal factor in immune system dysfunction. Pine Bark Extract has been shown to critically influence the functions of inflammatory and immune cells. Immune cell activity could be restored or increased with Pine Bark Extract. White blood cells also increase as well as the restoration of imbalanced T-cells in a study of retrovirus-infected mice.

Supplements of magnesium offers some people with CFS varying degrees of relief. Magnesium is a mineral that is involved in the cell's energy production. One British study found that people with CFS had below-normal blood levels of magnesium. After receiving injections of magnesium, 80 percent reported improvement in their symptoms.

But even if their blood tests don't show magnesium deficiencies, people can still benefit from extra doses of the mineral. Magnesium, like potassium, is pumped into the cell, so normally there's a higher concentration inside the cell than there is in the blood. And that pump mechanism may not work very well in people with CFS, so their magnesium levels can be normal in the blood and low in the cell.

Typically, magnesium glycinate, a chelated version is more readily absorbed in the intestional tract and without complications, and is recommended my may practitioners. Since magnesium intake creates a need for more calcium, taking a supplemental dosage of calcium with magnesium is desirable. The ratio is typically, 2 to 1, or for every 1,000 milligrams of calcium there is 500 milligrams of magnesium.

The B-complex vitamins are needed to support the adrenal glands, which are vital glands relating to dealing effectively with stress. They also support the central nervous system, which is of course necessary in coping with excessive levels of stress. B vitamins are lost by the droves when under stress and it is prudent to take supplements of B Complex when under stress. The family of B Comlex vitamins are also involved in energy production, which makes them essential for people with CFS.

Check the label to make sure the supplement contains at least 50 milligrams each of thiamin, pantothenic acid and vitamin B6 and 50 micrograms of vitamin B12. Also, consider taking a separate B-complex supplement whenever excess stress is present.

Coenzyme Q10 is like vitamins C and E and beta-carotene and is a member of the antioxidant family, a group of nutrients that protect your body's tissues from everyday wear and tear by disarming destructive free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that wreak havoc at the cellular level by stealing electrons from your body's healthy molecules to balance themselves.

Besides being a potent antioxidant, coenzyme Q10 has an important function in energy production: It reacts with another enzyme to let cells convert protein, fat and carbohydrates into energy.

Research indicates CFS patients are not deficient in Q10, they are deficient in an enzyme which reacts with it. Taking extra amounts of Q10 seems to encourage more production of the deficient enzyme and hence better usage of Q10. The better the two enzymes work together, the better the body converts food into energy.

Adrenal gland Glandulars can be taken to releave Adrenal Exhaustion, caused by prolonged systemic stress.

Vitamin B12 supplementation may be needed as most CFS patients display abnormally low levels of B12 and abnormally high levels of homocysteine in the cerebrospinal fluid.

High doses of antioxidants and digestive enzymes have been very helpful in improving abnormal blood conditions caused by free radicals. Grapeseed/skin extract has been shown to be an effective antioxidant for this purpose.
